Non-linear behaviour and failure mechanism of bamboo poles in bending

The adoption of bamboo poles in construction can support the reduction carbon dioxide emissions generated by manufacture conventional structural elements produced from unsustainable industrialised materials. This research focuses on study nonlinear softening behaviour and failure mechanism bending through a series experimental tests Moso (Phyllostachys pubescens) Finite Element simulations supported digitisation techniques. results indicate that this is caused incremental development cracks at locations where circumferential tensile capacity exceeded leading to eventual pole. Also, suggest reinforcing with pretensioned stainless steel bands ineffective counteracting significant stresses associated longitudinal cracks. More generally, work highlights challenges limitations applying traditional methods testing design for manufactured components highly variable natural element speculates whether modern digital technologies be adopted manage more effectively effects inherent variability.
